Quick Summary: Most 1-day and 3-day tours get back to Uyuni between about 17:00 and 20:00, which lines up with evening buses to La Paz leaving between about 19:30 and 21:00. Todo Turismo’s 21:00 departure is the safest fit; if your tour runs late or you want to rest, stay a night and take BoA’s morning flight. Book your return bus before your tour starts, and do not schedule an international flight from La Paz the same morning you arrive.
Getting to Uyuni gets most of the attention. Getting back is where plans quietly fall apart. Tours run late, evening buses sell out, and arriving in La Paz at dawn after three cold nights on the Altiplano is harder than it sounds.
This guide explains exactly when tours return, which buses and flights fit, and how to plan the return so it does not cost you a connection. For general route planning, see our La Paz to Uyuni guide.
Your return plan starts with a realistic finish time.
| Tour type | Typical start | Typical return to Uyuni | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-day tour | About 10:30 | About 17:00–20:30 | Sunset tours finish later |
| 3-day tour (Uyuni loop) | About 10:30 on day 1 | About 17:00–18:00 on day 3 | Long drive back from the lagoons |
| 3-day tour ending in Chile | About 10:30 on day 1 | Drop at Hito Cajón on day 3 morning | You are not coming back to Uyuni |
| Tour from San Pedro de Atacama | Morning in Chile | About 17:00–18:00 on day 3 | Ends in Uyuni |
Some operators state an end time around 18:00 for their 3-day tour and recommend scheduling your onward departure later than that. Treat any return time as approximate. Breakdowns, weather and slow groups all add time.
| Option | Departs Uyuni | Arrives La Paz | Approx. cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Todo Turismo night bus | 21:00 | About 06:30 | Historically $39–$45 | First-time visitors, most 3-day tour finishers |
| Local night buses (Panasur, Trans Omar and others) | About 19:30–20:00 | About 05:30–06:30 | Bs 295–386 cama under the La Paz fare band | Budget travelers who finish early |
| BoA flight | Morning, around 09:00 | About an hour later | Often $80–$150 one way | Comfort, tight schedules, poor sleepers |
| Ferrobus to Oruro, then bus | Friday around 01:00 | Late morning via Oruro | Lowest on paper | Rail fans with matching dates |
Bus fare bands come from the transitional table that took effect in La Paz on 28 September 2026 after Bolivia removed its diesel subsidy. Return fares from Uyuni are set locally and are typically in a similar range; confirm at the window.
Todo Turismo leaves its office on Avenida Cabrera in Uyuni at 21:00 and arrives in La Paz at about 06:30, according to its published schedule. That 21:00 departure gives you a few hours of breathing room after a 3-day tour, which is exactly why so many travelers choose it.
What it includes:
Panasur has typically left Uyuni for La Paz around 20:00 and Trans Omar around 19:30. These are cheaper, but the earlier departures leave little margin if your tour gets back at 18:30 tired and dusty. They suit travelers on 1-day tours that finish on time, and those who speak Spanish and know how Bolivian buses work.
This is the most important tip in this guide. Evening buses to La Paz fill up, especially in July and August, around New Year and during Carnival, and 2026 fuel problems have reduced the number of departures. Buy your return ticket on the morning you arrive in Uyuni, before your tour leaves.
Boliviana de Aviación (BoA) is currently the only airline flying nonstop between Uyuni and La Paz. Recent schedules show a morning departure from Uyuni around 09:00, landing about an hour later at El Alto.
Since 3-day tours return in the late afternoon, flying means one more night in Uyuni. That is not a bad thing:
Flights are more expensive and can be delayed by wind and storms, particularly from December to March. For the full comparison of air, bus and rail, see our how to get to Salar de Uyuni guide.
Ferroviaria Andina’s reduced Ferrobus service has been listed as leaving Uyuni for Oruro early on Friday mornings, around 01:00, arriving in Oruro around 08:00. From Oruro, buses to La Paz take about 3.5 to 4 hours.
It only works if your tour finishes on a Thursday and you are happy to wait until after midnight. Confirm the schedule with Tickets Bolivia before planning around it, as timetables published online are often outdated.
You may have three or four hours to fill after your tour.
Uyuni has no finished bus terminal building. Company offices and departure points cluster around Avenida Cabrera and the nearby streets in the centre of town.
Night buses arrive in La Paz between about 05:30 and 06:30, near the main bus terminal. That is early, cold and often dark.
Public buses to Copacabana and Puno are cheaper on paper, but they leave from different terminals than your Uyuni bus arrived at, and you handle the border alone. They suit fluent Spanish speakers who want to move fast. For first-time visitors, an organized service removes most of the confusing steps.
Many travelers do not return to La Paz at all:
Can I take a night bus to La Paz the same day my Uyuni tour ends?
Yes, and most travelers do. Three-day tours usually return between about 17:00 and 18:00, and Todo Turismo’s bus leaves at 21:00, which leaves a comfortable margin. Book the bus ticket before your tour starts, as evening departures can sell out.
What time does the bus from Uyuni to La Paz leave?
Todo Turismo leaves Uyuni at 21:00 and arrives in La Paz at about 06:30. Local companies such as Panasur and Trans Omar have typically left earlier in the evening, around 19:30 to 20:00. Check current times when you buy your ticket.
Is there a flight from Uyuni to La Paz?
Yes. BoA flies between Uyuni and La Paz, usually with a morning departure from Uyuni around 09:00 and a flight time of about an hour. Because tours return in the afternoon, flying normally means spending one extra night in Uyuni.
Can I catch an international flight from La Paz the morning after my tour?
It is not recommended. Night buses arrive around dawn, delays are possible, and strikes or blockades can stop buses altogether. Plan to arrive in La Paz at least one full day before any international flight.
How do I get from Uyuni back to Peru?
Return to La Paz by night bus or flight, then travel to Copacabana and on to Puno and Cusco. Bolivia Hop covers the La Paz to Peru corridor with hotel pickups and border assistance, while public buses are a cheaper option for confident Spanish speakers.
Tour return times, bus departures and flight schedules from Uyuni vary by operator, season and road conditions, and Bolivian transport was disrupted repeatedly in 2026 by fuel shortages, the removal of the diesel subsidy, strikes and blockades. Fares quoted here are approximate and may have changed. Confirm your tour’s expected return time in writing, book your onward ticket before the tour starts, check road conditions on the day, and allow a full buffer day before any international flight.
